The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors around that, not only the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
