Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the ability to contest specific calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
